Industrial Doctorate Centre Showcase event
The Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC) in Composites Manufacture held its Showcase event in October 2021. The IDC has been running since 2013 and recently recruited its final student. The event marked this milestone and the launch of a brochure to summarise the IDC activities.

Our research
In the blog articles below you can find out more about some of our research projects.
Novel blade technologies improve helicopter efficiency
Developing new flying technologies that are more efficient and drastically reduce fuel burn is key to becoming more sustainable. The SABRE project developed different morphing concepts that will enable us to quickly and accurately control the shape of each blade and hence the airflow, during each rotation.
Read more about the SABRE Project in our blog.
CerTest – Certification for Design: Reshaping the Testing Pyramid
The CerTest research project aims to develop integrated high-fidelity structural testing and multi-scale statistical modelling through Design of Experiments (DoE) and Bayesian Learning. This will holistically address the challenges that are preventing step-changes in future engineering design of composite structures by reshaping the traditional ‘Testing Pyramid’.
Read more about the CerTest project in our blog.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Fellowship
Professor Steve Eichhorn’s EPSRC fellowship, Realising Functional Cellulosic Bio-based Composites, includes an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) aspect. The technical work focuses on biobased and sustainable composites, and the ED&I aspect of the work will aim to improve the experiences and inclusion of Black students and staff.
Read more about this Fellowship in our blog.
Working with Airbus in Composite Manufacturing R&T
For future wing structures, Airbus are moving towards more highly integrated and larger structures, bringing with it manufacturing challenges associated with the scale such as element alignment and complexity.

Engage with us
There are many ways to engage with the Bristol Composites Institute, from short Masters projects to full PhDs, from working parties to being a guest speaker.

We welcome collaboration and are flexible to your needs. Examples of collaboration opportunities are summarised on our webpage.

Composites Hackathon

Three companies were invited to set a composite challenge that required some blue-sky thinking for our Advanced Composites PhD students.

Dr Mike Sloan, Managing Director of Technical Composites Systems said: “The Hackathon at Bristol was both enjoyable and Beneficial to Technical Composite Systems. From an industry perspective, the day was an excellent opportunity to engage with the innovation and creativity at Bristol.”

Read more about the Hackathon event and find out how to get involved.

Industrial Composite Repair Working Party

In response to feedback in the last Industry Advisory Board for the BCI, we have now facilitated two repair working party meetings. The working parties contain nine different companies representing aerospace, automotive, defence and marine sectors.

Key areas of interest have been identified and these will be addressed at a ‘Reducing the Burden of Repair’ day hosted at the National Composites Centre on 24th May. For more information and to attend the event, please look at Eventbrite.
