It was not until the 20th century, however, that fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials were used as critical elements in emerging applications for which failure can mean anything from interrupted operation to catastrophic collapse with subsequent fatal accidents involving operators and users. Numerous structures of this kind can be found in the aerospace sector—significant parts of commercial and fighter airplanes are made of advanced composite materials; the automotive industry—racing car chassis, ceramic brakes, etc; the wind industry, where wind turbine rotors with diameters of more than 100 m are now constructed using fiber-reinforced composite materials and the civil engineering domain, with a substantial number of foot and vehicular bridges being constructed and numerous conceptual composite house design.
