ABOUT THE US GLASS FIBER MARKET

Below is a Turkish translation of an article published in the January-February 2020 issue of CompositesWorld magazine.

US Fiberglass Market

Amidst the unresolved US/China trade dispute, positive developments continue in the US composites sector, driven particularly by growth in the wind energy, aerospace, and construction industries. Overall, the US composites market was valued at USD 26.7 billion in 2019 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of %3.8 over the next five years, reaching USD 33.4 billion by 2025. Glass fiber composites dominate the market, followed by carbon fiber composites.

In the U.S., glass fiber is a significant reinforcing material, growing at a rate of %1.7 in 2019 to reach 2.6 billion pounds (approximately 1.2 million tons) in volume and USD 2.2 billion in value. U.S. glass fiber demand is projected to reach 3 billion pounds (approximately 1.4 million tons) by 2025 with a compound annual growth rate of %2.4.

ABOUT THE US GLASS FIBER MARKET

The transportation market, comprising buses, tour buses, commercial vehicles, and automobiles, is expected to become one of the largest markets in the U.S. over the next five to ten years. Key vehicle manufacturers are investing in composite material technology to lighten vehicles and meet regulatory carbon emission reduction targets.

In the construction industry, common glass fiber reinforced polymer applications include panels, bathrooms and shower enclosures, doors, and windows. Construction demand for glass fiber recorded a growth of %1.5 in 2019 in terms of value delivery. This growth was driven by sustained job growth, low mortgage rates, and slowing inflation in housing prices.

Continued easing of lending standards and increased funding for state and local construction measures are other important factors in the US construction market.

Due to climate change and the emergence of natural disasters (such as earthquakes and hurricanes), the major challenges facing U.S. infrastructure necessitate extensive research efforts and greater use of advanced technologies and materials. Composites are increasingly being used in the repair and strengthening of structures built with other materials.

Lucintel, cam elyafı üreticileri yeni üretim kapasitesi ekledikçe cam elyaf üretiminde kapasite kullanım oranının 2020 yılında hafifçe yaklasık %90’a düseceğini tahmin ediyor.

To meet the increasing demand for glass fiber in various applications, companies are striving for growth both organically and inorganically. Jushi USA commissioned an alkali-free fiber production line in 2019 with an annual capacity of 96,000 tons and a total investment of USD 350 million, while Nippon Electrical Glass acquired the remaining PPG USA fiberglass operations for USD 550 million during 2017-2018.
