Bossing Out, Professional Coaching In

EGİAD (Aegean Young Businessmen Association) organized a webinar titled "Manage Change with Coaching," where best coaching practices used in the business world were discussed, bringing together ICF Turkey officials with its members. The event featured presentations of experiences from across organizations focusing on increasing productivity, changing perspectives, and developing skills by elevating leadership potential. “Manage Change with Coaching” The meeting, titled [Meeting Title], was attended by Çakır Dilek Yunar, the Aegean Region Representative of the International Professional Coaching Association (ICF) Türkiye, and ICF officials Serdar Samsun, İlkay Öğrenci, and Serkut Kızanlıklı.

The event, which featured speakers from ICF Turkey, a branch of the International Coaching Federation (ICF Global), which has over 40,000 members worldwide and maintains its global leadership in the coaching profession, addressed topics such as "Professional coaching in the world and in Türkiye," "The power and impact of coaching in managing change," "Solidarity," "Resilience," "Balance," and "Transformation." In his opening speech at the meeting, Alp Avni Yelkenbiçer, Vice Chairman of the EGİAD Board of Directors, stated that we are in a new era of change, and emphasized that it has become essential for managers to transform into coaches in this process. He said, “Globalization, the rapidly growing competitive world, and the changes and innovations in every field have forced all organizations to restructure, and managers and employees in businesses to constantly improve and change themselves in order to keep up with the times. Today's business world and management understanding has ensured that the competencies of a manager—developing, supporting, and guiding—have gained importance instead of giving directives and controlling. For this reason, leaders have begun to take on titles such as guide, mentor, team leader, and team leader. Leaders who determine the direction, focus on their goals, and establish purposeful relationships with their team are the pioneers of change. In today's business world, organizations and employees need an expert, a coach, to achieve better results, to be successful and have high performance, and to manage change.”.

Coaching Replaced the Boss

EGİAD Vice President Alp Avni Yelkenbiçer, stating that coaching is a good tool for coping with change, said: “In addition to the support it provides at the individual level, coaching also contributes to the ongoing need for change and development. Therefore, coaching plays a fundamental role in restructuring change agents, guiding organizations and individuals aiming for success. Contemporary managers are becoming more of a "Coach" than a "Boss" by guiding, encouraging, and motivating their employees, and therefore, they are abandoning authority-focused approaches and changing their leadership styles by empowering their employees. Managers are expected to be people who ask questions rather than tell stories, who influence rather than intimidate, and who choose to encourage and support their subordinates instead of threatening or oppressing them. The concept of "coaching" is about facilitating the emergence of the potential within people to achieve meaningful and important goals.“.

We need to identify our employees' strengths.

Yelkenbiçer noted that with the accreditation given by institutions, the number of companies providing professional coaching training in Türkiye and the number of professional coaches trained by these institutions are rapidly increasing, and said, “Coaching, which is also considered an applied positive psychology method, directs the individual from a problem-focused perspective to a solution-focused perspective. It brings out the individual's strengths. It supports the individual in getting to know themselves better and reaching a better point. Coaching is not about controlling and managing. It is a process. In this process, the coach is a facilitator, a mirror, who offers options that may be right for the individual and the institution, expresses opinions on issues that he thinks are wrong, but leaves the final decision to the individual. In short, coaching is about maximizing potential.”.

Çakır Dilek Yunar, ICF Turkey Aegean Region Representative, stated that they have created programs and standards to maintain the credibility of the coaching profession in Türkiye, saying, “As ICF Turkey, our aim is to ensure that the coaching profession becomes an integral part of society. Our members lead the way in this goal by representing the highest quality in professional coaching. By exhibiting a transparent, accessible, and participatory approach, and by utilizing technological opportunities, we prioritize continuing and implementing projects that will benefit our members and society. Establishing partnerships with the business world, civil society organizations, and other coaching associations to increase the credibility of our profession, building strong relationships with our members, and updating our regulations in parallel with the changes and innovations taking place at ICF Global are among the main issues we will address.”.

Yunar stated that there were approximately 71,000 coaches globally in 2019, emphasizing that the coaching profession is listed among the 50 professions of the future, and added, “The US market size in 2019 was approximately $15 billion, and the estimate for 2022 is approximately $22 billion. 61% of those using coaching skills have a master's or doctorate degree, and 33% have a bachelor's degree.’.

Serdar Samsun, an official from ICF, stated that professional coaching is definitely not a form of consulting, mentoring, training, or therapy.
